Our Art Curriculum
Echo Childcare’s art curriculum provides a balanced approach to creativity by combining both process art and product art experiences. Children are encouraged to explore materials, express their ideas, and develop fine motor skills through open-ended art, while also participating in guided projects that support learning goals, themes, and skill development. The focus is on creativity, confidence, and the joy of creating.
Echo’s Art Approach
Our small-group art program is designed to maximize creativity, independence, and engagement. Each child is provided with their own set of carefully prepared materials, allowing them to fully participate without waiting or sharing. This approach minimizes conflicts, encourages focus, and creates meaningful opportunities for children to explore, create, and express their ideas with confidence.
Core Principles
At Echo Childcare, art is guided by key principles that support meaningful learning and creativity. Children actively participate in the learning process through materials and opportunities for choice and self-expression. Teachers provide encouragement, scaffolding, and support without taking control, allowing children to explore ideas, solve problems, and create with confidence. Like our preschool curriculum, Echo’s focus is on the process of learning and discovery rather than the race to a finished product.
Our Art Curriculum - Program Overview
Our art program provides each child with their own materials and includes a balance of Handwriting Without Tears, open-ended, and guided art experiences. Activities support creativity and skill development, while educators use supportive language to encourage independence and self-expression.
Art Experiences in a Small Group Setting
1. Individual Materials
Each child is provided with their own set of art materials, which are prepared in advance to ensure active participation without the need for sharing. Having sufficient materials promotes independence, reduces conflict, and allows children to remain focused, engaged, and fully immersed in the creative process.
2. Weekly Art Planning
Each week includes a balanced art program featuring Handwriting Without Tears art activities connected to the letter of the week, along with process-based, open-ended art experiences. Through child-led exploration and creativity, children engage in meaningful learning without a fixed outcome, fostering imagination, problem-solving, self-expression, and sensory development.
3. Creativity Meets Skill Development
We provide a balance of product art and process art experiences. Product art helps children develop specific skills, techniques, and confidence through guided activities, while process art encourages creativity, exploration, and self-expression. Product art complements, rather than replaces, Handwriting Without Tears and open-ended art experiences and is thoughtfully connected to learning goals, themes, or children's interests whenever possible.
3. Plan with Intent (Teacher-Guided & Child-Led)
Art experiences are planned with intention while remaining child-led. Educators introduce simple, open-ended activities focused on a skill, concept, technique, or material rather than a specific end product. Through observation and responsive teaching, children are encouraged to explore, create, experiment, and express their ideas in their own unique ways.
