Clean-up time may be one of the most challenging transitions in a childcare classroom. But with thoughtful classroom organization, clear expectations, and consistent routines, it doesn't have to be!
At Echo Childcare Kelowna, we believe that play is an essential part of children's learning and development. Our approach balances play-based exploration with structured learning, allowing children to develop independence, curiosity, and confidence. At both our Sutherland Ave (Landmark) and Molnar Rd (Rutland) locations, our classrooms are bright, cheerful, and thoughtfully designed to invite children to play. We offer a variety of toys and activities that encourage children to explore, create, and learn freely.
But how do we make clean-up time easier when there are so many exciting things to play with?
Here are 4 ECE secrets we use at Echo!
1. Teach Clean-Up Expectations 🧩
We don't simply tell children to clean up. We teach them how to clean up!
Our teachers model and guide children to put toys in the correct bins, organize materials, and care for their classroom. Through daily practice, children learn responsibility, respect, and independence.
2. Use Consistent Transition Signals 🎵
Children thrive when they know what to expect!
Whether it's a clean-up song, a bell, a train whistle, a light signal, or a teacher singing, we choose a familiar signal and use it consistently.
Over time, children recognize the signal and understand that it's time to transition from play to clean-up.
3. Create Clearly Defined Play Areas 🏠
All Echo classrooms follow a similar organizational approach, with designated play areas and simple, child-friendly names.
Art Area, Car Area, Block Area, Home Area, Book Area, and Tabletop Area are just a few examples.
When children know where things belong, cleaning up becomes much less overwhelming!
4. Label EVERYTHING! 🏷️
This is one of our favourite ECE secrets!
We use clear picture labels on toy bins and shelves so children can easily identify where materials belong.
When every toy has a home and every bin has its place, even our youngest learners can participate in clean-up time with greater independence.
The Echo Difference ❤️
At Echo, we believe a well-organized classroom is not just about keeping things tidy. It's about creating an environment where children can succeed independently.
Clean-up time is more than a transition. It's an opportunity for children to practise responsibility, cooperation, problem-solving, and respect for their shared environment.
And the best part? When children know what to do and where things belong, clean-up time becomes a natural part of their day rather than a daily struggle.
Learning is a journey, not a race. Even learning to put toys away takes time, patience, consistency, and a little guidance from caring teachers. ❤️
